A school in 20 days - Diary 2

You got to feed your masons!

16. september 2008

Day 2 - Tuesday 16th of September

Work started a little late today and there was lot of confusion. It was about food at the common makeshift kitchen.  For better efficiency we had decided that the masons will be served free food in a common kitchen so that they won't have to worry about cooking etc. And in return we proposed that they give us one extra hour of work in the evening i.e. close work at 6 instead of the normal 5 pm. They had happily agreed, but since it is a small settlement of freed Kamaiya bonded labourers, it seems that the person responsible for cooking could not find pots big enough to cook for 30 people and hence the morning meal which masons normally have by 8 am was not ready. After wasting an hour we started work and finally had the meal at 12.

Well something to learn from, and a little treatment for the Day1's problem of speed. By the end of Day 2 we had laid four courses above the plinth beam.

Oh yes another excitement was that we also put the door frames in place today, so even if it was a relatively slow day the standing door frames gave a feeling of progress.
