Corruption denounced in Koboko

Obiga Modesto, chairman of Anti Corruption Coalition Koboko, reports from the local activities during the anti-corruption week

Anti Corruption Coalition Koboko is a loose coalition born of Tukaliri Multipurpose Association (TMA) in 2000 of which the membership is composed of local organisations and educational and religious institutions and other companies in the county. All have come boldly to fight corruption in their own community.

The 1st November 2003 was the fourth year that these people of Koboko denounced corruption, the development retarding disease.

The activities took off in Koboko town where all the participants gathered at TMA farmers’ house to access transport to the venue, which was Kuluba sub-county headquarters.

Before the coalition members set off, the LC3 chairman of Koboko town council, Buruga Idle, who was the chief walker, fixed the first anti-corruption signpost by the main road. He was when accompanied by the coalition members on the ten minutes journey to the day’s venue. The convoy included all the councillors of the sub-counties of Lobule, Midia and Koboko town council.

Also representatives from Arua’s RDC and Inspectorate of Government were present. The day was already colourful and joyous.

“Our chairman has also joined the corruption fighters, this must be a serious thing”, a young man near me exclaimed.

The peaceful demonstration ended with the national anthem and prayers.

Those involved in the day’s activities were

  • Ombachi Parents Nursery School, whose band was in the forefront assisting the chief walker doing his job
  • Koboko United Women’s Association
  • Sudanese Active Women’s Association
  • Koboko prosperous Mothers’ Association
  • Kuluba United Women’s Association
  • Primary schools and the general public of Koboko.

The week’s activities included mobilisation of the general community of Arua district for public discussions, radio talk shows, dramas, traditional dances and much more.
