History of CBNRM in Zambia
1942First forest officer arrived in the Northern Rhodesia and initiated a forestbranch in Agriculture Department. First tasks to find botanical names of indigenous trees, create forest reserves for production purposes and protection of water catchments areas, and increase level of revenue.
1947
Forestry becomes a Department within Ministry of Agriculture.
1948
Forestry became a full permanent Department and forest policy drafted.
1949 Forest policy was adopted Abolition of free timber licenses to government department Opening of a forest offices at HQ Ndola and in six provinces
1942-51
Start of large-scale forest inventory to locate and estimate timber for the Copperbelt mines
1967
Completion of large scale forest inventory and district forest management books. These were proposed measures for meeting local wood consuming industries; for improve local utilization; for importing or exporting timber; and for control of water shed, catchments and erosion.
1976
The vegetation map of Zambia was produced and national and local forest estimates map was produced using the forest inventory information.
1976-1985
Industrial Plantations Department (IPD) turned into a corporation (ZAFFICO)
1984-1986
A preliminary wood consumption survey was carried out. The purpose was to integrate information about both wood consumption and supply for planning future development.
1987-2005
A legislative review of the forestry sector was undertaken in the context of the Zambia Forestry Action Programme (ZFAP) between 1987 and 1997. The review resulted in the National Forestry Policy of 1998 and the Forests Act No. 7 of 1999, in corporating Joint Forest Management strategy as a management option for sustainable management of the Local Forests, open areas, and forest plantation.
