Young Women In Action (YWA)

YWA is a non-profit NGO fighting to make changes for the young female population of Zambia. Young women are a particularly disadvantaged group in Zambian society. They are rarely able to participate in decision-making at any level and therefore are not able to effectively make changes for themselves neither locally nor nationally.

YWA's vision is to create an enabling environment in which to empower young women and help them realize their full potential in all aspects of life. This, they hope, (slet) will help increase young women's participation in national development and help better their chances to succeed in life.

MS Zambia supports YWA in their work in Chongwe and Kafue. Here YWA are working to increase the young women's influence on political issues in the community by changing the attitude towards young women. Often, young women are considered not to have the necessary skill nor experience to participate in decision making or take up higher positions e.g. in women's organizations.

YWA tries to empower the young women for example through their mentoring programme in which women or men, who have somehow succeeded in life, are attached to schools where they act as motivators and role models for adolescent girls. Another approach is through capacity building, which entails training members of the organisation in relevant subjects such as gender and HIV/AIDS. After receiving this training, the members pass on their knowledge to young women in the communities
