Youth Association of Zambia (YAZ)

In Zambia the youth accounts for 66,7% of the population. However, youth are rarely consulted or included in decision-making at any level, meaning that they are unable to influence decisions that affect their life and future. YAZ aims to empower the young population of Zambia, in order for them to be able to make positive changes for themselves and their communities.

Theme: Building Local Democracy

YAZ is a non profit NGO, formed in 1994, who focuses on the promotion of youth empowerment in Zambia. YAZ envisions an empowered and motivated youth that participates fully in leadership and decision-making processes, while also contributing to poverty reduction. YAZ seeks to reach the goal of an empowered youth through different projects such as youth exchange programmes, work camps and HIV/AIDS education. Furthermore YAZ is working with MS Zambia in Solwesi, Kabwe, Livingston and Mansa district to build up local democracy with a special focus on the youth.

By sensitizing young people through workshops, drama and radio programmes, YAZ is providing them the skills and knowledge for them to participate in the decision-making processes. Furthermore, they advice the youth on how to access funds such as the Citizen Economic Empowerment Fund, which will give them the opportunity to start a business and thereby provide for themselves and their families.
