Tidligere gældsslaver besætter jord
Kamaiyaerne - de tidligere gældsslaver - har startet en ny kampagne, der skal presse regeringen til at gennemføre sine løfter om en seriøs rehabilitering og uddeling af jord. Kamaiyas threaten to distribute land among themselves
KOL Report
GULARIYA, Aug 9 - More than 10,000 Kamaiyas (bonded labourers) who have been squatting on 5,000 bighas of forest and cotton development industry in Gulariya, have threatened the authorities that they would distribute the land among themselves if the Government fails to rehabilitate them as soon as possible.
In a press meet Sunday, Moti Devi Tharu, central committee member of the Freed Kamaiyas Society, said they plan to picket the offices of BASE and West Terai Poverty Allegation because they unjustly used the name, Kamaiya, to increase their earnings.
Meanwhile, 80 families of freed Kamaiyas who were sheltering in tents at Kapasibagiya in Tribhuvannagar-1 in Dang put up their separate huts in the land that belongs to District Administration Office.
According to Tek Bahadur Raut, president of Freed Kamaiyas Society in Dang, they refused to change after the authorities ignored their demands. “We will stay here permanently unless proper and prompt action for a rehabilitation process are discussed,” he said. (snn)
