Nepal on the Agenda in Copenhagen
Danish Association of International Co-operation (MS) has taken initiative to organise a conference about the current situation in Nepal. Different stakeholders will come together and discuss how bilateral donors and INGOs can help promote peace in Nepal
By Line Wolf Nielsen10. November 2004
For many years organisations such as Danida, MS and other Danish stakeholders have contributed positively to Nepal’s development. The current conflict has made this work increasingly difficult, however. There is now an urgent need to analyse the conflict and discuss which possibilities different actors have for contributing to sustainable development and peace.
That is why The Danish Association of International Co-operation (MS) has taken initiative to organise a conference about the current situation in Nepal.
On November 18th and 19th 2004 many different stakeholders will come together in the Danish capital of Copenhagen and discuss how bilateral donors and INGOs can help to promote peace in Nepal.
In general, the conference will focus on three themes:
• Conflict, peace and democratic governance
• Poverty and marginalization
• Human rights and conflict management.
Also the perspectives and challenges for Danish development aid to Nepal will be on the agenda.
MS Nepal Country Director Nina Ellinger is participating and other speakers from Nepal include Charan Prasain from HURON; Dr. Chaitanya Mishra from Tribhuvan University; Dinesh Prasain from COCAP; Bisnu Upreti from Friends for Peace; and Jagat Basnet from Community Self reliance Centre..
The seminar is expected to provide a good platform for reflection on the present crisis in Nepal as seen with a Danish perspective. It is the hope of the organisers that the participants will return home with new ideas as how to address the current challenges.
MS Denmark is organising the seminar together with Amnesty International and the Danish Ministry of Foreing Affairs.
The Nepal Conflict Seminar will be followed by a NGO Seminar, which will continue untill November 20th. 2004
Following the conference held in Copenhagen on 18th and 19th November 2004 a booklet has been produced.
The booklet contains the presentations and the subsequent discussions. Also included are summaries of the recommendations that resulted from the two workshops.
