The State of Democracy – Democracy Audit

How is democracy working for poor and marginalised people in developing countries? How do poor and marginalised people them self evaluate the state of democracy in their countries? And what can be done to improve democracy?

MS and our partners have started a democracy auditing process. The auditing process has two overall objectives:

  • The process is in itself a learning experience for the people doing it.
  • The outcome in the form of national assessment reports and a global report feeds into a national and international debate on democracy and democratisation with special emphasis on democracy for poor people.

The audit is based on a methodology developed by University of Essex and International IDEA. MS has adapted the methodology for our purpose. The key instrument is a questionnaire with 16 main questions regarding the state of democracy in the country. A key feature of the methodology is, that it is citizens of the country them selves who are considering the questions and evaluate the state of democracy.

Please, consult the documents we are linking to to the right for a more thorough description of the audit, the process and the auditing tools
