Farewell
Timeout for old-timer
He left us one year ago after almost six years with Cristian Rural Sevice (CRS) in West Nile and more than 20 yeas in different African countries with his wife Hanne. But he could not resist the chance of coming back to his beloved Africa – this time without his wife and on a short-term contract as community development worker in south Sudan with Needs Service Education Agency (NSEA).
Alas, now he has left us again. Leif West went home to Hanne and their son Mark in Denmark in May. Once again he claims that he has left for good. Nevertheless, many colleagues are betting on how long the grand old timers African timeout will last this time. Rumor says he will be back in September. No matter what, we bid him goodbye and wish him all the best. (kp)
Bye to the blonds and the brownie
Before moving to glittering Kampala, they illuminated the dark streets of Koboko with their mzungu skin and blond hair for three years. For sure, the Schmidt’s, Tine, Martin and daughter Anne-Sofie, have served their development duty during four and a half years in Uganda. In May the two female family members went home to Denmark, while the male stays around a bit longer.
Tine and Martin began their Ugandan odyssey working with Tukaliri Multipurpose Association (TMA) and Uganda Scouts Vocational School (USVS) respectively. When Anne-Sofie reached the age of pre-school, the family moved to Kampala where Tine joined Anti Corruption Coalition Uganda (ACCU) while Martin joined the private sector. Lately, Tine has worked for the country office developing democracy materials, and Martin is back with the scouts in Koboko on a private venture. (kp)
