What is the ACDEG?

  • The African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance is a roadmap setting out international standards on democracy and good governance on the African continent.
  • It was adopted by the African Union on january 30, 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The charter promotes democratic rule and peaceful transfer of power through free, fair and transparent elections, representative systems of government, human rights and rule of law.
  • The charter demands commitment to the rejection of unconstitutional changes that lead to conflict and instability, the principles of good governance and a joined effort via the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities to promote and consolidate democracy.
  • ActionAid and Media Foundation For West Africa have produced an introductory, simplified version of the ACDEG, which you can read here.
  • Learn more about the ACDEG at the African Union website.
