Volunteer at Café Mellemrummet

As a volunteer at Café Mellemrummet, you will be part of a large and international community that helps to raise money for projects around the world. You can become a barista, book concerts, invent cocktails or do PR work.

We offer a relaxed and flexible working environment co-created by, and for, the volunteers. It is important to us that everyone gets the best out of it, whether by learning new skills, making new friends or by doing some good.

The profits from the café go to projects around the world, and the volunteers help to choose which projects the café supports. Currently, we are supporting a project in Nepal that empowers young people to fight for women's rights and create change, culturally and politically. You can read about the projects that Mellemrummet supports here

VOLUNTEER BEHIND THE BAR

Working behind the bar means the opportunity to craft cocktails, serve pints, and/or make attractive milk foam decorations on the top of caffè lattes.

You’ll get thorough training, a barista course, a bunch of bartender experience, and the opportunity to talk with a bunch of wonderful people. No previous café/bartending experience necessary.

We typically have room for new volunteers. You just have to be over 18 years old and able to take three 4-hour shifts a month.

Join our introductory meetings

We hold introductory meetings on the third Thursday of the month at 17:00 (except in July) at the café (Ravnsborggade 11, 2200 Copenhagen N). Here you will learn more about what the work entails and get to learn more about the café’s volunteers. Feel free to write to us at mellemrummet.pc@gmail.com if you have any questions!

In addition to taking shifts behind the bar, volunteers at Mellemrummet can also participate in one or more of the cafés working groups: helping with PR for café activities, decorating the café, choosing what products to put on the menu, and much more. You can read more about the groups below.

Bring Our Green Backyard to Life

Tucked away in the heart of Nørrebro is a magical – and somewhat secret – green backyard.

This summer, we’re inviting you to help bring it to life with events that are political engaging, community-driven, atmospheric – and yes, neighbour-friendly.

We’re looking for cultural and political groups, grassroots collectives, and individuals who want to create events with meaning. Think talks, debates, community dinners, workshops, or other cultural formats.

If you have an idea that fits the vibe – low noise, high impact – reach out to Michael at mld@ms.dk (Also if you’d just like to help out behind the bar!)

What We Offer

We provide access to the backyard for the right ideas, including:

  • A cozy and green backyard in the heart of Nørrebro

  • A “plug & play” bar setup with organic products at fair prices

  • Access to a basic sound system suitable for talks and low-volume music

  • A team member to support and train your group in using the bar, equipment, and running the event, until you have learned it and can run it on your own

  • The possibility to continue your event indoors at our café Mellemrummet after 20:00

All profits from the bar go directly to supporting Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke’s work with activism and volunteer engagement, and helps build a stronger community – so your event contributes to something bigger.

Practical Info

  • You provide a team to coordinate the content, run the bar and manage the stage. We’ll train you so you can do it yourselves.

  • Events can take place outdoors until 20:00, in agreement with our lovely neighbours

  • No loud parties – but talks, debates, workshops, and shared meals are very welcome

  • We will answer your application during July

Want to help bring the space to life together with us and others in the city?

Bar Group

In the Bar Group, you can help choose what we serve in our glasses and from our draft beer taps.

So if you have a good eye for what the people of Copenhagen want to drink, and you want to decide what to put on our drinks menu, the Bar Group is a great place to start. You can come to beer tasting sessions, learn to keep track of orders and self-inspection routines required of cafés by the authorities.

Event Group

As a volunteer in the Event Group, you have the opportunity to try your hand at event planning and everything that it entails.

Volunteers in the Event Group organize, coordinate and oversee events at the café. This includes everything from concerts, poetry slams and book readings to film showings, political debates, exhibitions, theme parties, etc.

PR and communication group

The PR and communication Group is responsible for contact with the press and other external communication.

As a volunteer in PR and communication, you help to ensure that café activities reach the intended target groups. You will write updates and create events on the website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, design posters and flyers, and whatever else you can think of in the realm of creative means of communication.

HR Group

The HR Group is responsible for ensuring that the community is running well at the café, including the well-being and joy of our volunteers.

As a volunteer in the HR Group, you will help with recruitment and training of new volunteers, shift planning, and volunteer care. So, if you like to make an effort to make everyone feel welcome and have a good time, the HR-group might be for you.

Decor Team

Volunteers on the Decor Team make sure that the café looks great.

This group plans construction days, buys furniture and makes sure that the physical surroundings of the café provide an inviting atmosphere. So if you love interior design and creating just the right vibe with furniture and small details, the Decor Team is just the place for you.
